This project is part of Phase 1 of Upper Zakum full field development in Abu Dhabi. The scheme is known as UZ750. Phase 1 aims to increase the capacity by 100,000 barrels a day (b/d) of oil and the overall development aims to increase production capacity from 550,000 to 750,000 bpd by improving oil recovery at the field. Updated On : October 29, 2017 Construction is in progress with about 86 per cent completed. The project is expected to be ready by the fourth quarter of 2019. Updated On : May 29, 2017 Client has announced that it has selected (19) candidates from its National Development Program (NDP) to join the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) team to aid in the preparation of the Midfield Terminal Building and its operations. The ORAT programme is a detailed testing phase of all aspects of the airport’s operations, and will ensure a smooth transition once the new terminal is opened. Client launched the operation of ORAT programme earlier this year by creating 14 working groups that will look at the various functions of the airport. These working groups include terminal and land side operations, air side and ramp operations, aviation security, baggage handling, FM and support facilities, recruitment and training, logistics and contracts, airport management center, systems, process trials, relocation and transfer, fire and life safety, testing and commissioning coordination, and risk management. The NDP graduates selected will join these various working groups, and more graduates will continue to join as the programme evolves and the opening of the terminal gets closer. Updated On : March 6, 2017 The expansion work on the airport is progressing well. A 28-meter-high arch stretching up to 180 meters at the entrance, is one of the world's largest internal arches. The MTB, stretching over 742,000 square meters will be the largest in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and will be visible from more than 1.5km away. Project is expected to be opened by 2019. Updated On : September 28, 2016 The terminal is gearing towards opening in December 2017. Construction is progressing as scheduled and expected to be 90% complete by end of this year. Updated On : June 23, 2016 Client has announced that the final de-propping of the last arch in the roof is now complete. It took 3-days, with 90 jacking point being used around the building for support while the process was underway. This final stage 8,000 of weight onto the roof, which weighs 21,000 in total. Meanwhile the work is expected to begin on the exterior enveloping of the front façade and on the preparation necessary for the interior on the central processor. Updated On : June 22, 2016 It is understood that 73% of the terminal is now completed. The baggage handling system is nearing completion and is expected to be finished by end of 2016. Similarly, work on the air side of the airport is almost 70% complete. The terminal’s car park is also 70% finished. Work will begin in a few months on retails units at the Duty Free area. Updated On : June 13, 2016 Client has announced that the steel structure of the roof of this MTB has been completed. The MTB roof span is 319 meters at the widest point with 18 arches, the largest of which is 180 meters wide and 52 meters high. With the main steel structure of central processor roof now complete, the next major milestone will be the de-propping of final arch in the central processor. Work is also progressing on closure of the building envelope and fit-out of the four piers. Once the overall structural work and closure of the building envelope are complete, the internal space will be handed over to concessionaires so that they can commence fit-out of their exceptional retail concepts. Once structural works are completed and the building envelope is complete, the client will commence handing over the internal space to concessionaires so they can commence fit-out work. Vetrotech will supply its Contraflam EI 60, 90 and 120 products throughout the brand new 700,000 square meter terminal. Once complete, the terminal will include a number of Vetrotech's fire-resistant glass solutions providing resistance against conducted, converted and radiant-heat, which will help safeguard the welfare of passengers. Many of the models working at the MTB are the 43 meter telescopic boom and its 32 meter and 41 meter articulated booms - the 41 meters with a maximum outreach of 19.8 meters and a lifting speed of less than 40 seconds, while the 32 meter articulated boom and 43 meter telescopic booms are favored for their rough-terrain capabilities. The first contract has been awarded to Aer Rianta International (ARI), which is an airport retail management company with operations in Europe, New Zealand, North America and the Middle East. It will design and operate duty free space dedicated to perfumes, cosmetics, skincare, sunglasses and jewellery. The second contract has been awarded to Lagardere Capital, which will oversee the tobacco, confectionery and fine foods categories. Lagardere Capital is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi Capital Group, an Abu Dhabi-based investment company, and Lagardere Travel Retail. Updated On : December 21, 2015 Client has announced ground-breaking for the fire station in this development. The state-of-the-art 12,000 square meter facility will house the teams who will be first on the scene for any emergency situation at the airport once the MTB is up and running. The Midfield Fire Station will be equipped with nine response vehicles and 172 firefighters, all managed by the client's Emergency Service and Quality Assurance Department. The facility has been developed in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Civil Defence, while the construction and operational plans for the new fire station are fully compliant with UAE Civil Defence regulations and requirements, meeting the internationally recognized standards for effective emergency management. The central location of this fire station, at the heart of Abu Dhabi International Airport, will enable the teams based there to provide coverage for any future terminal developments. The first three of 106 passenger boarding bridges have been installed in the new MTB. The logistics of placing such a large piece of equipment on an active job site, with ongoing airfield and terminal work, was challenging, but the expert team performed flawlessly and the client anticipates that the process of equipping all 65 new gates with this important infrastructure will be just as smooth. German manufacturer Thyssenkrupp delivered 24 bridges to the MTB site and will be providing the remaining bridges over the coming 15 months. Pre-installation testing is ongoing at their manufacturing facility in Spain prior to the bridges arriving in Abu Dhabi, with further trials taking place on-site at the MTB. Eight of the bridges have been specifically designed to serve the upper deck of Airbus A380, with the longest bridge capable of extending 45 meters. The airport is currently 55% complete. It is expected to be 70% complete by the end of 2015. Contractors have started the process of de-propping the centerpiece of the building - the curved roof. In this first of nine de-props, a team of 45 specialists with 60 hydraulic jacks removed 30 temporary supports used for constructing the roof element. The supporting structure for the MTB central roof consists of 18 inclined arches of varying heights and a roof grillage in total weighing around 20,000 tons. By completing the de-propping process by February 2016, the roof will be a free-standing structure. It will feature the world's longest indoor arch spanning 180 meters, at a height of 52 meters, with a weight of around 1,000 metric tons. Steelwork for the four piers is complete and construction is underway for the enclosure structure, including the glass curtain walling and roofing for the four piers. Once the building envelope and glazing for all four piers is finished later this year, the focus will move towards inside of the building: fit-out, systems integration and all other infrastructure such as a baggage handling system with capacity to handle over 19,000 bags per hour through its 10 reclaim carousels and 27 kilometers of conveyors. Updated On : May 14, 2015 SITA has been awarded a five-year contract to provide integrated end-to-end passenger and airport management solutions for this project. The air transport IT specialist will provide a full range of integrated airport solutions. This includes SITA's next-generation airport management system, common-use passenger processing platform, automated boarding gates, flight information display systems and baggage management services. SITA will also manage technology integration at the new terminal for IT and telecommunications technology, as well as other special airport systems. The SITA team will help the airport operator meet any challenges presented during construction of the new terminal and ensure the technology meets the airport's operational goals. An integral part of this solution is SITA's AirportCentral, the airport operational database, which will allow the airport to centralize all its data into a single repository of operational information. The airport can use this database to set up real-time dashboards covering the most critical aspects of its operations, as well as for flight management, billing and reporting. The airport management solution also includes SITA's AirportVision flight information display to keep passengers up-to-date on flight information and SITA AirportResource Manager, which will help the airport coordinate the planning and real-time management of its fixed resources, including aircraft stands, gates and check-in counters. The airport will also benefit from SITA's AirportConnect Open passenger processing platform and its baggage operations management service, BagManager. To maximize flexibility and convenience, AirportConnect Open will enable all airlines using the terminal to access their respective IT applications in real-time on shared equipment and use any airport desk or gate for passenger check-in and boarding. SITA's BagManager will provide the airport with comprehensive baggage management, delivering real-time information on baggage status and helping resolve baggage issues quickly and efficiently. These include a joint venture of Hilalco and Wade Adams Contracting; Emirates Link Maltauro; Gulf Contractors Company; Al Naboodah Contracting; a consortium of Lane, National Contracting & Transport Company, Agility; and a consortium of Taylor Woodrow and Fibrex Construction. Scope of work covers construction, testing, commissioning and handling of the required facilities. The contractor will be responsible for construction of an employee consolidation center. The single-story building will be used for security screening of staff entering and leaving the complex. Other facilities that will be built include a goods and waste processor complex spanning 3,600 square meters, a long-term car park facility for about 1,600 vehicles, an employee car park, a car rental support facility with surface parking for 250 vehicles and taxi support facility with surface staging area for about 50 vehicles. Scope includes provision of design, supervision, labor, materials, plant and equipment to fully execute the MTC Soft Landscaping Design and Build contract, including but not limited to design, procurement, delivery, installation and maintenance. The MTC Soft Landscaping is part of the Midfield Terminal Building (MTB) Development and is integrated with the primary and secondary road infrastructure servicing the operations of the MTB. The site covers an approximate area of 185 hectares (1,950 meters x 950 meters), which is intersected by a number of elevated and recessed roads. The Contractor shall be required to complete all soft landscape works, including but not limited to, irrigation, drainage, lighting, planting hard landscape in coordination with ongoing and planned MTC and MTB works. Works shall be carried close to an active airport site, and must comply with the client's operational requirements, Abu Dhabi Municipality Building Permit criteria as well as strict Airport Working Conditions. Updated On : April 2, 2015 Three dimensional modeling techniques are playing a vital role in the development of this terminal. Engineers from RMD Kwikform have been using the software for the complex design and geometry of key parts of the structure. A major design challenge was formation of the main terminal building with its curved roof structure. This required the installation of some of the world's largest steel archways and girders. Curving in both the horizontal and vertical axes, construction of the terminal building relies on millimeter accuracy to install each fabricated segment, which forms the arches and a central girder. The engineers worked with steel roof sub-contractor, China State Construction Engineering Corporation to design components using 3D modeling for the phased erection of arches. This process included the design of a heavy-duty support system for the erection of steel arches. With a need to support the arches in both vertical and horizontal planes, a critical component of the solution was the design of a special ball joint, with an additional jacking frame system. In order to ensure the frame was able to cope with the key loading forces and changeable climatic conditions, including high wind and heat, the engineering teams used the latest modeling technology before components were then fabricated and tested. The hold baggage systems include next-generation of high-speed explosives detection system deploying a combination of X-ray technologies to produce high resolution images of baggage contents. It is understood that there has been some changes to the design, but construction remains on schedule. The variations in design were due to the complexity of the building and changes in technology. Client has hired the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) team that will assess the readiness of the terminal, while staff and dummy passengers will test the terminal from the first quarter of 2017. Almost 40% of the steel structure has been completed and all the glassing will be finished by the end of May 2015 or early June 2015. Updated On : January 26, 2015 It is understood that 99% of the steel work on the four piers of the MTB has been completed. The MTB has four piers, which will accommodate 65 stands in total. The longest pier stretches over 500 meters with all four piers using a total of 13,300 tonnes of steel. The building enclosure includes glass works for the curtain walling and roofing works, which will consume 175,000 square meters of glass for the curtain walling and 260,000 square meters of aluminum for the roof. Alongside the MTB, works on the airfield and terminal taxiway are progressing as well. Ground works on the Automated People Mover (APM) Tunnel that will connect the MTB to the future terminal buildings at Abu Dhabi International Airport have commenced. Under the terms of $50 million deal, TAV Information Technologies is to design, set up and commission a local area network (LAN), wireless local area network (WLAN), cable management system, master clock system, storage area network, VoIP telephone central system based on IP and all servers and computer equipment. This major milestone was marked with an A380 take-off and landing. The upgrade included refurbishment and widening of the runway, elevating it to Code 'F' standard, to be able to accommodate the world's largest super-jumbos. UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) formally handed over the Southern Runway operational certification to Abu Dhabi Airports on December 23, 2014. In addition to the Southern Runway renovation, the Southern Airfield Program included the construction of an air-side tunnel running more than 1.2 kilometers in length, enabling connectivity between the Midfield Terminal Complex and the existing Terminals 1 and 3. An additional 21 wide body aircraft stands were also built along the apron to accommodate increased aircraft movement. The total cost of Southern Airfield Program was approximately $226 million. In keeping with Estidama building code, Knauf Exeed Insulation used locally manufactured, non-hazardous materials, with durable and sustainable credentials to ensure energy efficiency of the building. Knauf's HVAC and building insulation solutions are made with patented ECOSE binder technology, which is free from phenol formaldehyde and offers superior level of sustainability. Knauf has supplied over 500,000 square meters of ECOSE Duct Insulation, 18,000 square meters of Duct Liners for acoustic treatments and 450,000 meters of ECOSE pipe insulation. Over 500,000 meters of pipe insulation has been used to insulate piping network in the building. Apart from its formaldehyde-free properties, ECOSE Technology has a low thermal conductivity of .23 at 24 degrees centigrade, it is easy and fast to install and reduces labor costs. The foil vapor retarder and pressure-sensitive lap assure a positive vapor seal. ECOSE Pipe Insulation meets the fire and smoke safety requirements as per Estidama building codes. FlamBICC 6 is not only approved by the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense, but also by UK's Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB). The technology of Crisplant has been selected by the contractor consortium to provide the Baggage Handling System with its high capacity tote system called CrisBag for the distribution of baggage at the new MTB. A team of approximately 60 specialized employees has been delegated to the work site to electrically install, connect and test more than 14 kilometers of CrisBelt and 15 kilometers of CrisBag conveyors. Work will require two years commitment of the specialized Airport Team of Tamas. It has been announced that the project is absolutely on schedule and within budget. Updated On : December 11, 2013 It is understood that the talks are currently underway between the client and the Department of Transport to provide road and railway connectivity to the new terminal. Part of the connectivity of the terminal includes a significant interchange with the DOT to link the terminal to the main highway. Client is also planning to provide space for a light rail or metro, once the project is completed. Updated On : November 7, 2013 Local/Australian Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG) has been awarded a contract worth $160 million to build infrastructure around the new Midfield Terminal Building. HLG will work across multiple work fronts installing infrastructure at both airside and landside operational areas both within the Midfield Terminal Construction complex, the East Midfield Terminal area and along the existing E11 highway. It will involve building new interchanges, roads and bridges, some MEP work and installation of backbone infrastructure. Work is set to commence on site this month, with completion staged over the next 18-24 months. Updated On : October 28, 2013 Steel fabrication company Kelly Steel has been awarded a $22 million contract to build a new 3,500-tonne baggage handling facility at the airport. The company is expected to hire an extra 70 staff, bringing the total to around 300 as a result of this deal. Updated On : October 22, 2013 The first buttress has been placed for the main structural steel arches of the Midfield Terminal Building, seven days ahead of schedule. The buttress is one of 18 sub-structures that will form the base of the steel structure. This base will hold the nine arches that comprise the building's roof, which will have an arch span of 180 metres at its widest point. The whole steel structure of the MTB contains 85,000 tonnes of steel and the assembled buttress makes up 0.1% of the entire structure. According to the client, the project would be 11% complete on November 07, 2013, in the next 200 days it would be 28% complete. Half way through next year, all the concrete work would have been completed. By the end of 2014, the steel structure would come up with large parts of facade and glazing completed. Mechanical and electrical works are expected to commence by end of this year and continue through 2014 encompassing water, electricity and power. In 2014-2015, there will be work on building the world's largest baggage handling system, while in 2016, the installation of sophisticated security and control systems will be done. In the last nine months, there will be trial runs, integration testing and running checks on operational readiness. The new terminal is well on track to be inaugurated on July 17, 2017. Updated On : September 8, 2013 It is understood that Abu Dhabi's Urban Planning Council (UPC) has awarded a 3 Pearl Design Rating from the Estidama Pearl Building Rating System (PBRS) for this Midfield Terminal Building (MTB). The Estidama Pearl Rating System is a framework for sustainable design, construction and life-cycle operation for communities, buildings and villas. The MTB was designed to achieve a considerable reduction in annual energy consumption through the specification of an appropriate and climate responsive building form and facade, which will feature a high performance low e-double glazing to reduce solar gain and low U-values specified for the walls and roof to minimize heat gain. Substantial energy demand reductions will also be achieved through the use of a highly efficient lighting system and an adaptive and effectively controlled HVAC system. A sophisticated Building Management System and an Advanced Energy Measurement and Targeting System will also be in place to allow energy performance of the building to be recorded and monitored, which will enable clear monitoring and understanding of energy use and potential improvements. Limiting the use of potable water was a priority in the MTB design. Water demand was specifically studied and water fixtures were selected based on their ability to maximize reductions. In doing so, the MTB can achieve and maintain a reduction in water consumption of 45% over a comparative baseline case. Furthermore, there is a commitment to divert a minimum of 75% of construction waste from landfills during the construction phase, in addition to using recycled materials where practical, regional materials have been selected for the construction of MTB to reduce the demand for fossil fuels for transportation purposes. The new terminal is being fabricated from a total of 70,000 tonnes of steel and nearly 500,000 square metres of steel and glass cladding. The new piers will accommodate up to 65 jets, including the jumbo Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-800. Work is due to start in February 2013 and completed by 2015. Construction of the 700,000 square metre terminal building will commence in the third quarter of 2012. Project will include two phases, the four year construction phase, followed by operational readiness assessment phase (ORAT), where during a (9) month period thorough tests of all aspects of the terminal will take place to ensure operational and efficiency readiness from the first day of operation. During construction process, area immediately surrounding the MTB is also being developed to ensure required infrastructure and facilities are available to support the operation of the MTB in 2017, which include aircraft parking stands, terminal roadways, connecting roads to Abu Dhabi/Dubai highway, and utility plants. Passenger facilities and duty-free retail will include high-end commercial offerings across more than 18,000 square metres, including internationally renowned luxury goods and designer outlets and almost 10,000 square metres of international restaurants and cafes, offering a wide range of style and cuisine. A consortium of South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Kumho Engineering & Construction, Beijing-based China State Construction Corporation and the local Al-Shafar General Contracting Company submitted the second lowest price of $3-billion. A team of US-based Bechtel Corporation, Local Al-Jaber Group and Turkey’s Enka submitted a price of $3.16-billion. A consortium of South Korea’s Samsung C&T, Local/Belgium’s Six Construct Abu Dhabi and Local/Lebanese Arabian Constriction Company (ACC) submitted $3.25-billion. This project involves construction of a Midfield Terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport. The terminal will be built between the airport's two runways and used by Etihad Airways, the emirate's flag carrier. It will have a total built-up area of around 700,000 square metres, with initial capacity to handle 30 million passengers a year. Client has invited interested general contractors to submit their expression of interest to participate in pre-qualification for the Midfield Terminal Building. Applicants, either solely or in joint venture, must demonstrate their capability in meeting the following minimum criteria for consideration to participate in the pre-qualification process:
1) Minimum turnover of US$5 billion per year.
2) Successful completion of five (5) projects of similar complex nature during the past ten years, two of which must each be valued in excess of USD 1 billion.
3) Ability to meet the statutory requirements to undertake work of this nature in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
4) Ability to provide guarantees, securities, bonds and evidence of financial strength proportionate to the size of the project.
5) Proven implementation of standard operating procedures consistent with globally recognised sustainability best practices. Locally, the Urban Planning Council is developing the Estidama guidelines to positively influence the construction industry in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Updated On : November 14, 2016 It is understood that American neo-conceptualist artist Jenny Holzer and veteran Italian sculptor Giuseppe Penone will make up the first lot of contemporary artists to create installations for the permanent collection of this museum. The artists' works are inspired by the museum's iconic architecture and diverse stories, and play an important role in connecting the cultures and civilizations of the past with the relevant ongoing conversations and artistic practices of today. Penone has created a four-part installation, Germination, which addresses the relationships between humanity, art and the natural world. Leaves of Light is a bronze cast of a wild cherry tree, a symbol of life from the artist's native Maritime Alps in Piedmont, near Turin. Set with mirrors, the sculpture has been designed to capture and reflect the kaleidoscopic rain of light that is generated by the museum's canopy. Penone collaborated with French porcelain manufacturer Sevres on Propagation, on a series of ceramic tiles with a hand-drawn, concentric pattern emanating from a central fingerprint, a motif that Penone has been exploring in various works since 1994. Holzer's work for this museum is equally characteristic. Text-based, it takes the form of three engraved marble panels, each to be installed in an external wall of the museum's galleries. The panels feature draws from three historic texts: a reproduction of an ancient Mesopotamian cuneiform tablet that bears a Sumerian-Akkadian creation myth; a quote from the French Renaissance philosopher and essayist Michel de Montaigne; and a passage from the medieval Islamic polymath Ibn Khaldun's 14th-century Muqaddimah. Widely regarded as the most important piece of Islamic history of the pre-modern world, the Muqaddimah or Introduction, is a monumental work that many scholars consider as a foundation for modern fields of inquiry, such as economics, sociology, ethnography and the philosophy of history. At the Louvre Abu Dhabi however, Holzer and Penone's installations will also be shown alongside historical pieces from the museum's collection, including an 18th-century Ottoman fountain and pavement from Damascus, Syria. Updated On : June 16, 2016 The developer has commenced plans to integrate the sea into this museum project. The process is taking place in three stages within the temporary earth platform, an area of reclaimed land sitting four meters above sea level, from which all the construction work to date has been built. At the start of the project, a continuous hydraulic cut-off wall was constructed and pumps were installed to remove the water and allow excavation, piling and subsequent works to be undertaken in dry conditions. This delicate process is the result of months of planning and preparation to ensure that the inflow of seawater takes place in a controlled manner around and within strategic places in the museum. The first stage of integrating the sea with the site involved shutdown of selected pumps to allow the water level to rise slowly around the museum's basements located below seabed level. The second stage has also been completed, where the remaining pumps were shut down and seawater was pumped inside the temporary hydraulic cut-off wall. The third and final stage, which started this month, involves further pumping of seawater within the temporary walls and around the museum, raising the water level to match the sea level. This will be followed by the removal of hydraulic cut-off wall and the final construction of permanent marine sea defences, which will complete the full integration of sea with Louvre Abu Dhabi. To date, the scheme has witnessed completion of the museum's 180-meter-diameter dome, as well as the installation work of 30,000 square meters of natural stone paving and completion of its basement levels. Advanced work is currently underway on the main gallery spaces, entrance and administration buildings. Updated On : June 8, 2016 This project has achieved another milestone with the attachment of 4,500 tube lights to the dome's steel structure. The structure has eight layers of cladding consisting of 7,850 star-shaped pieces of aluminum and stainless steel of various sizes and angles. Updated On : April 18, 2016 The air-conditioning division of Al-Futtaim Engineering has been awarded a contract on this project. Krantz, the air-conditioners which Al-Futtaim Engineering distributes in the Middle East, have been selected for the museum. Updated On : February 18, 2016 Workers are currently removing the towers supporting the museum's signature roof. There were about 120 of the towers, put up nearly three years ago. Later they carried a series of platforms that let workers attach a complex network of aluminum stars four layers deep, described as a 'rain of light'. Now, most of them have gone. In the coming months, the area will be flooded. The design of Louvre Abu Dhabi surrounds it on three sides by seawater that flows to the very edge and, in some areas, even under the dome. At present, this water is held at bay by a combination of earth dams and extremely powerful drainage pumps. Remove these and the sea will slowly but surely reclaim those areas. The temporary towers still there represent some of the last obstacles before the flooding can begin. Once opened, the museum's permanent collection will be exhibited across 12 state-of-the-art galleries in dialogue with loaned art works from 13 leading French institutions to tell a universal story of human history. Updated On : September 28, 2015 The final piece of cladding has been lowered into place on the upper surface of the museum's mighty roof, a jigsaw puzzle that has taken more than 30 million man hours and 424 days to complete. This procedure combined expert crane driving skills, complex choreography, brute strength and heavy engineering. The underside of the dome's cladding is still in progress, but the museum's canopy can be seen in its entirety from top. Measuring 49 square meters and weighing 415kg, the last star is one of 7,850 that will form the eight-layered, 180-meter-wide constellation that is responsible for generating what promises to be Louvre Abu Dhabi's architectural piece de resistance, Jean Nouvel's much vaunted Rain of Light. Created by nothing more than the movement of Sun and its passage through the eight layers of Louvre Abu Dhabi's complex canopy, the Rain of Light has already started to bathe the museum's precincts in a constantly shifting display of kaleidoscopic, reflected light, adding a degree of poetry to the practical business of construction still taking place beneath the dome. Now that the 4,481 stars have been fixed to the upper surfaces of the museum's roof, the attention of teams responsible for its construction will turn to the remaining four layers of cladding that are yet to be finished on its underside. When the cladding is finally complete, it will add an additional 2,000 tonnes to the structural steel core of the roof that was lowered into its final resting place in December 2014. Measuring 565.5 meters in circumference and composed of 400,000 individual elements, Louvre Abu Dhabi's roof sits on top of four towers that have been carefully concealed inside the museum buildings, creating the illusion that the whole 7,000-tonne structure is hovering in mid-air. Updated On : June 29, 2015 The first drops of what's known as the Rain of Light, falling through the nearly completed canopy that will cover this museum, have been revealed. Its a colossal engineering and design challenge that, after two years, is now all but complete. Here on a platform of scaffolding is the first glimpse of what will draw visitors in their hundreds of thousands from around the world. Like a jungle canopy, the museum's dome stretches in every direction. It encloses a space larger than two football pitches and the height of an 11-storey building. The few workers still remaining on this level are busy wiping and polishing the last grains of sand still clinging to the dome's aluminum and steel cladding. For the past six months, the temporary towers have had a different function, providing a platform for up to 700 workers attaching layers of star-shaped cladding below the dome, while above them, others perform the same task for outer layers. Now that lengthy task has been completed, while the hundreds of tonnes of steel are dismantled. Many of the towers were originally lowered into place in one piece, using a giant 1,600-tonne crawler crane. Teams of workers heave the beams across what are the roofs of the museum's galleries, while a shower of sparks and brilliant glow reveal a welder breaking the large sections into smaller pieces. Until its done, the next stages cannot begin. They include mundane tasks such as waterproofing, but also the installation of glass skylights that will illuminate the main galleries. At present, several of the towers rise through the empty rectangles where the skylights will be fitted, blocking their installation. In total, there are 500 trusses, 30,000 meters of beams and 17,000 square meters of platforms and scaffolding to be hauled away. More than 4,600 pieces, nearly all of them unique in size and shape, are being fixed into place - the work here is nearly complete. The temporary towers that first held up the dome were once the most visible signs of the museum's existence. Several of the galleries have risen up around them, while piece by piece, the structure of the dome has hidden them from the outside world. While construction is expected to be completed by end of this year, the building is not expected to be delivered until spring 2016, after which the installation of collection will take place, which is expected to take up to three months. The museum's panels are as intricate in design as the canopy, which will cover them, with both structures complementing one another. The cladding is currently enveloping the galleries that are nearing completion beneath the giant saucer-shaped roof of the museum. The museum's buildings and canopy are more similar than they seem. Both rely on a complex system of cladding to achieve the efforts desired by their architect, Ateliers Jean Nouvel. In the case of the canopy, that cladding consists of 5,000 tonnes of super-sized structural steel and 7,850 aluminum stars, while in the case of buildings it involves 4,680 panels of a substance called ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete. Unlike traditional reinforced concrete, which uses steel for its reinforcement, the museum's specialist concrete relies on a matrix of glass fibers to increase its compressive and tensile strength. It also benefits from minimal shrinkage and impermeability, an important quality for a material that will regularly come into contact with seawater that will eventually flow between the museum's precincts, turning the whole complex into a miniature Venice on the Arabian Gulf.
Updated On : April 5, 2015 Belgian-based company Meyvaert Glass Engineering has been appointed to provide display cases for the art pieces of this museum. Meyvaert will provide more than 100 tailored cases that will play a key role in the project's museology. The display cases, bases and podia will be distributed across the museum's permanent galleries housing some of the more delicate artifacts of Louvre Abu Dhabi's permanent collection, such as a 13th century Syrian section of the Holy Quran, containing suras 78 to 114, an Egyptian Mummy bandage from Ptolemaic period. Display cases placed in the middle of the galleries will seem to rise up from the ground. The tall display cases and bell jars are generously sized, allowing visitors to discover the works from all points of view. The individually-designed cases will be shipped in special temperature-controlled containers to ensure they remain unscathed, before they are re-assembled within the museum. Design of cladding of dome is inspired by interlaced palm leaves traditionally used as roofing material in the emirates. The roof's pattern is the result of a geometric design, repeated at various sizes and angles in eight layers, giving the dome a delicate form that leads to a rain of light effect. All of the museum's structures have been completed, with work on internal finishing progressing. As of early March 2015, more than 24,000,000 man hours have been completed on the project. Updated On : February 16, 2015 It is understood that 7,850 stars will join together to form the eight layers of cladding that will envelop the museum's flying-saucer-shaped canopy, the 5,000-tonne steel structure that was lowered into its final resting place in December 2014. Made of aluminum and stainless steel, the largest stars measure 13 meters in diameter and weigh 1.3 tonnes, and when all of them are in place they will form a constellation that adds an additional 2,000 tonnes to the roof's weight. This is what it takes to produce the optical effect that promises to be Louvre Abu Dhabi's architectural piece de resistance. Jean Nouvel's Rain of Light has been designed to bathe the museum's shaded precincts in a shower of kaleidoscopic light. Updated On : January 27, 2015 Infrastructure work at the Cultural District is anticipated to reach peak levels next month. From February 2015, the number of staff will ramp up from 1,500 to 2,000 as work intensifies to get the necessary infrastructure in place ahead of the opening of this museum in December 2015. Completion of the entire infrastructure package is slated in first quarter of 2016. The Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Building, which is programmed to open in second quarter of this year, will provide emergency services for the museum. Updated On : January 18, 2015 Once completed the museum will encompass 9,200 square meters of art galleries. Its 6,681 square meter Permanent Gallery will house the museum’s permanent collection taking the visitor through a journey from the most ancient to contemporary through art works from different civilizations. The Temporary Gallery will be a dedicated space of 2,364 square meters presenting exhibitions of international standards. Updated On : December 15, 2014 It is understood that the huge dome has been put in place at this development. The lift process included raising the dome off the temporary towers and then lowering it 38 centimeters down on to four permanent piers. Preparations in the run up to the lifting included extensive testing of the bearings that will hold the dome throughout its lifespan. The bearings underwent months of testing in California, USA, where it was proven they can support the final weight of the dome. The lift was possible with the utilization of 32 hydraulic jacks, manufactured specifically for the project, that can hold up to 10,000 tons in weight and which were operated simultaneously and remotely. The dome of the museum weighs 7,000 tons and is 180 meters wide. Its lift is the first of its kind in the world of construction for a permanent structure of this scale and size. Construction is progressing on-site of this project. To date, the concrete work has been almost completed. Furthermore, a total of 34,000 tons of reinforcement steel has been used and over 21 million man hours completed on site. Construction of the permanent gallery structures have been completed along with concrete work for the museum's basement levels and the security screening facility; a highly secure seven meter deep basement through which authorized vehicles will transport all the artwork of the museum. Updated On : November 5, 2014 UK-based Gilgen Door Systems has been awarded a $2.4 million contract to supply high-security shutters, sectional overhead doors and security grills for this project. The contract includes supply of SR4 security rated shutters providing high levels of physical protection and operational efficiency for the museum. Manufactured in UK and meeting Police Preferred and Secured by Design standards, Rolegard high security shutters help facilities to reduce security threats through proven target hardening measures. Tested by BRE against anti-jacking, prising, gouging, impact, cutting and drilling, the Rolegard SR4 Security Shutter was the first to achieve LPS1175, Issue 7, Level 4 certification and is the only one to have passed a supplementary test for stainless steel profiles. The Rolegard units will be supplied in a variety of sizes up to 7.0 meters high by 8.2 meters wide. Each shutter is electrically operated and interfaced with the building control center and security system, enabling full control over opening and closing sequences. The shutters are specified with unique stainless steel profiles, which further add to their durability and aesthetics, supporting the museum's unique location on the water's edge in Saadiyat Cultural District. The contract was awarded to Gilgen following a successful trial of three full size Rolegard shutters within a working prototype of the Louvre building. The intensive trial was designed to test the sustainability of equipment to the unique operational requirements of the museum. Gilgen will complete the manufacture and supply of all of the doors to the agreed project timescales along with professional installation training for engineers, technical support and hand over commissioning. A dedicated project management team has also been put in place by Gilgen to ensure quality, effective communication and on time delivery. Updated On : October 21, 2014 The museum's dome sits atop of 120 temporary support towers, which will be disassembled and removed leaving the dome resting on four main piers only. Cladding of the dome will include the placing of a total of eight layers of aluminum and stainless steel inserts in a clockwise direction, above and below the steel frame. To achieve the rain of light effect within the museum, these cladding pieces have been carefully engineered in specific sizes and orientations forming approximately 8,000 stars in both the upper and lower layers. These star-shaped pieces range from 3.5 to 13.5 meters wide depending on their position and location within the cladding design. To date, a total of approximately 144,000 cubic meters out of 145,000 cubic meters of concrete has been poured for the project. Furthermore, a total of 33,000 tons of reinforcement steel has been used and over 18,500,000 man hours completed on site. It is understood that construction of all the galleries has been completed structurally along with the concrete work for the museum's basement levels as well as the security screening facility; a highly secure seven meter deep basement through which authorized vehicles will transport all the artwork of the museum. Updated On : October 13, 2014 Masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci and Vincent Van Gogh will be among 300 works displayed at this museum. It will also feature paintings and sculptures from 13 of France's most renowned collections spanning from pre-Bronze Age to Pop Art. The loaned works include da Vinci's Portrait of an Unknown Woman, Claude Monet's Saint Lazare Station and Andy Warhol's Big Electric Chair, as well as ancient statues, vases and masks from across Asia and Africa. Many of France's grand museums, including the Louvre, Musee d Orsay and the Palace of Versailles will loan art to Abu Dhabi as part of a 30-year collaboration with the Emirate worth 1 billion euros. Updated On : September 23, 2014 The final piece of this museum's mega-structure domed roof has been put in place. In total, the dome is 180 meters long (the length of two football pitches). It has a total weight of 12,000 tonnes - broken down into the steel structure, weighing 7,000 tonnes and a further 5,000 tonnes of aluminum cladding. Its 85 segments were assembled on the museum's construction site prior to being lifted into place on top of 120 temporary support towers by a specially-commissioned crane. A 600-tonne capacity crane was also used to construct sections of the dome closest to the outside edge. And a 1,600-tonne plus capacity crane - which stood 230 meters tall and needed 90 trucks to bring it to site - was used to allow for assembly. Concrete works under the dome have been completed. All the galleries are up and fit-out of those galleries has already commenced. Client has announced that the construction is on schedule for opening of the iconic museum by end of 2015. The first completed gallery, which is one of the largest within the permanent galleries, comes a year after mobilization on the ground had started. It is understood that a significant amount of work is well underway for construction of the museum's interior walls along with installation of mechanical plant, water pipes, electrical cabling and security systems. With more than 5,300 workers on site and around 117,000 cubic meters of concrete poured so far, the construction work on galleries is progressing in parallel with installation of the museum's prominent dome, which features 85 steel segments that weigh between 30 to 70 tonnes each. To date, 20% of the dome's structure has been put in place, with the completion of full structure steel frame set for September 2014. Majority of concrete work for the museum's basement levels has been completed, including underground buildings, such as the Energy Centre that houses pumps, generators, transformers and similar building elements and the Security Screening Facility, a highly secure seven-meter deep basement through which authorized vehicles will transport all the artwork for the museum. Till date, more than 10 million man hours have been dedicated to this project reflecting the amount of foundation work that the museum requires. The local contractor won the Specialist Security Cobntractor package via a consortium led by Arabtec, after a series of pre-qualification and live demonstrations to showcase their integrated security solutions. Updated On : December 12, 2013 It is understood that the first segment of the iconic dome has been assembled and placed into position on site. The dome, which has a 180-metre diameter and includes 10,800 square steel tubes, will feature (85) segments, which will be assembled on the museum’s construction site prior to being lifted into place on top of 120 temporary support towers by specially-commissioned crane. The segments which will form the dome range between 90 to 70 tonnes-a-piece and are each built from over 100 square steel tubes, five to seven metre in length that are joined together in a repetitive horizontal, vertical and diagonal platform. On (10) month’s time, once the dome is completed, the 120 temporary support towers will be disassembled and removed. The pouring of over 70,000m3 of concrete across the museum’s build-up area and the ongoing installation of a double-layer waterproofing membrane below the foundation slab areas of the museum, an area of 64,000m2 which is expected to be completed by end of 2013. Construction work is currently taking place on the museums temporary platform, which was built to allow all works to take place in a dry environment. Updated On : September 10, 2013 It is understood that erection work is expected to begin in October 2013 on structural steel for a massive dome as waterproofing work on the basements are nearing completion. The dome is a 180 metre in diameter is the most prominent feature of the landmark museum and will be the most complex form of construction, comprising a 6-metre deep space frame truss structure supported only on four piers. The museums concrete frame will be completed during the first quarter of 2014, while the dome is expected to be completed by the end of 2014. The final stage will include marine works and the removal of temporary land platforms, which will be completed in 2015. This world class building will then transform into an island of its own with the removal of 40-metre high concrete walls currently built in the sand. This marks the start of one of the most critical stages in the construction process, whereby a double-layer waterproofing membrane is installed below the foundation slab areas. This step is taken after the 3,200 steel plates located in the museum's build-up site are given a special electrical charge that prevents steel corrosion, using a system known as cathodic protection. This work is taking place in the museum's basement levels, located seven metres below sea level, where all the artwork for the Louvre Abu Dhabi will be transported through a dedicated and highly secure tunnel leading to the various galleries located within the museum. Updated On : May 6, 2013 It is understood that the project has achieved its first major milestone in construction of the museum's distinct dome. The scheme witnessed the first concrete pours for one of the four piers that are to hold the dome of Louvre Abu Dhabi. The dome, which has a diameter of 180 metres and is expected to weigh more than 7,000 tonnes - almost the weight of Eiffel Tower in Paris - will be supported by four piers that will be nine metres high at the entrance of the museum and will reach up to 30 metres below. The design concept behind this laced dome is to reflect the interlaced palm trees traditionally used as roofing material in the region, allowing the sun to shine through like a rain of light. It was designed so the roof primarily acts as a shading canopy to protect the outside plaza and building below from the radiant heat of the sun, providing comfort and reducing building energy consumption. 3) Undertaken 5 building projects worth over US$ 500 million over the past 5 years.
4) Ability to meet the statutory requirements to perform work in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
5) No major change in shareholding in the last 6 months (not more than 30%).
6) Ability to produce Parent Company Guarantee (if relevant).

Updated On : June 5, 2008 UK-based engineering consultancy firm Buro Happold has been awarded a contract to provide engineering services on this scheme. It will work with the architect Jean Nouvel under a co-operation agreement on concept validation of the initial design and on schematic design of the museum. Buro Happold's scope of work covers a range of engineering disciplines, including structural, civil, site traffic, marine and environmental. The agreement will allow Abu Dhabi Louvre to borrow masterpieces from French major museums, including the Louvre, for a period of six to 18 months.
This museum will be built as part of the Cultural District at Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. The exhibitions in permanent galleries will be drawn from collections of the Louvre and other eminent French public museums and cultural institutions, including Centre Pompidou, Chateau de Versailles, Musee d'Orsay, Musee Rodin and Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Over time, the Louvre Abu Dhabi will also develop its own distinctive permanent collection. Invitation to bid documents for the main contract are expected to be issued by August 2007, with bid submission due in October 2007. A contract award is expected in December 2007, with construction due to commence in January 2008. French architect Jean Nouvel has been appointed as the architect.
